Once I discovered how easy it was to whip up skirts that my girls loved to wear, I rushed out to a fabric store nearby, coupon in hand, to get a selection of fabrics and knits to sew up a whole bunch of skirts.
My girls came with me to pick out the fabrics they wanted. Not necessarily the picks I would have chosen, but then again, I'm not the one wearing the skirts!
This is where my matt and rotary cutter really came in handy and made quick work of the cutting process. How did I ever get along without these until now?
I bought some black, tan and purple rib knit to use as the waistband. Luckily, I had some blue knit already at home which my eldest chose as the waistband for the blue skirt fabric.
I just love seeing the skirts laid out this way. I discovered, in the process of attaching the ribbing to the skirt fabric that the skirt fabric stretches the ribbing more than expected. You can see the flower print skirt was too large around the waist (even though I tried the ribbing on alone prior to attaching it). I didn't want to rip it out, so I folded it over and stitched it tighter. Lesson learned. Next skirt, I made sure the ribbing was tighter around the waist prior to attaching it to the skirt.
Of course, after the photo shoot was done, my middle child needed to try on all three of her skirts at once and twirl around for the next 10 minutes. If I was her age, I think I would have done the same thing!
