Did anyone out there wonder where I came up with the name for this blog???
Probably not - I don't have a large group of people reading this blog and it's kinda like telling the story that your parents named you after the location where you were conceived... but I figure I would tell it nonetheless, because it makes me feel better to share.
Several years ago, when I first started thinking about blogging (I'm a slow mover, what can I say), I paid for the domain name thedaleyplanet.com and sat on it for a while. I really thought that name was clever and imagined myself posting (appropriately anonymized) updates about my family so my relatives far away could keep up-to-date. But then my grandparents (who are the ones I would really want to share this with) got rid of their internet connection. And my life was super busy with two young ones. So nothing came of it, and I let it go. When I decided to take the leap and start a blog, that name just didn't feel right anymore.
The other day, I thought of another great play on my last name... thedaleygrind.com. Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and read me! That could be fun... and I might have gone with that one, if I hadn't already started this blog with this name.
But this name has special meaning for me on multiple levels, and that's why I like it.
I don't think I'll share some of the deeper meanings it has, but I will share the silly meaning of it...
One of the cheesiest movies that my husband and I call our favorite is Twister. There is this character in the movie nicknamed "Rabbit." He's what you would call the "map-man." This movie came out before in-car GPS systems were available. He was responsible for reading the maps and calling out directions as the team would chase their tornadoes.
There is a scene in the movie where Rabbit has directed the whole team to take a shortcut through a cornfield. The leader (played by Helen Hunt) is concerned that Rabbit has given him the wrong directions, to which Rabbit replies, "Rabbit is good, Rabbit is Wise." Shortly after saying that, they pop out onto a paved road so they can continue their chase.
My husband and I often use that quote on each other... sometimes to mean "trust me," other times to mean "didn't I tell you?"

I took the photograph above this past weekend at a local NH Audubon event for drawing birds. The event was a bit of a bust. We didn't see any live birds, only their collection of old, stuffed, dusty birds - along with this old, stuffed rabbit! I guess we did also see a few live turtles...
